UK firms 'should recruit in the recovery'

The government has encouraged firms to take on young people during the economic recovery as it launched National Apprenticeship Week.

It said that thousands of people are expected to take up apprenticeships this year, with businesses being encouraged to use the Apprentice Grant for Employers scheme, which offers a £2,500 payment for each 16 or 17 year-old recruited.

Pat McFadden, business minister, said that employers are starting to recognise the benefits they get from hiring young people in apprentice roles.

"Undertaking an apprenticeship is a great way of learning a trade and gaining vocational experience. Skills will be crucial to a strong economic recovery and I urge employers across the country to take the chance apprentices give them to boost their competitiveness, innovation and growth this year," he added.

Recently, prime minister Gordon Brown put his support behind sales recruitment hopefuls attempting to get on an apprenticeship scheme, adding that it was a great way for young people to show what they are capable of.
