Graduate applicants 'must offer more than a degree'

Applicants for graduate sales jobs and other post-university roles should try to offer a diverse range of skills to prospective employers, according to the head of public policy with the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).

The REC's Anne Fairweather commented that recruiters are increasingly looking for more than just a good degree result when selecting candidates to fill vacancies.

Graduates looking for sales jobs or other employment opportunities were advised to "think long and hard" about their breadth of experience outside academia, in areas such as charity work.

Such experience can "demonstrate that not only do they have the degree to prove that they are capable of doing the job but also that they have the sort of organisational skills and also the drive to engage with the business they are applying to", said Ms Fairweather.

The REC's July report on jobs discovered that demand for temporary staff declined in the month for the first time in the history of the survey, while candidate availability was rising.
