Small businesses not looking for graduate sales jobs
Research has found small businesses are setting out to recruit more school leavers than degree holders, a source says.
The survey, by the Forum of Private Business, suggests sales jobs are being given to staff who are cheaper to employ, is4profit.com reports.
It claims 20 per cent of small businesses target their recruitment at those who have recently left schools - almost twice the rate which seek out those who have undergone further studies.
This suggests a decrease in graduate sales jobs as companies seek to cut costs by recruiting younger employees.
Universities UK, which represents the institutions, tells the website the additional money is an investment in careers such as graduate sales jobs.
A spokesperson says: "[They] should have the qualities needed for employment in situations requiring the exercise of personal responsibility and decision-making in complex and unpredictable circumstances."
The survey also finds over three-quarters of companies of this size believe they do not need the skills a university education would supply.
Universities UK is an organisation which advances the interests of universities and works to provide information on policy issues affecting the area.
